Lakewood neighborhood in shock after mom accused of killing her 2 kids
LAKEWOOD, N.J. (PIX11) – The hush over a neighborhood matches the shock of those who live here after learning the news of a mother accused of killing her two children inside a home.
Naomi Elkins, 27, made her first appearance in front of a judge after being charged with the murder of her two children, who were just 1 and 3 years old. The pre-hearing rights advisement was virtual and mostly procedural, and Elkins mainly remained silent, answering only with a “yeah” twice when asked a question by the judge.
Neighbors on Shenandoah Drive, who did not wish to speak on camera, told PIX11 News they felt shocked and that tragedies like this don’t happen here.
Police were called to the home just before 5 p.m. Tuesday for a report of two children in cardiac arrest. First responders tried to save the children, but both were pronounced dead at the scene. The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office said in a press release it was determined the two kids were drowned; one of them was also stabbed.
Lakewood Police referred us to the Prosecutor’s Office, which has not offered further comment.
Elkins is due back in court on Monday, July 1.
