Lakewood power outage disables traffic lights

LAKEWOOD — Most traffic signals have gone dark in the township due to a power outage, according to the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office.

Jersey Central Power & Light reported that 1,968 out of 35,272 customers in Lakewood were without electricity just after 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to the company. A customer represents a household, business or other account.

What was that?: Loud boom in NJ today. Was it a fireball? Sonic boom?

The Sheriff’s Office was warning motorists to expect delays in Ocean County’s largest municipality, which is known for its gridlock even under the best of traffic circumstances.

The cause of the outage was under investigation.
