Large brush fire is out in Secaucus that impacted NJ Transit rail service

A large brush fire that burned a swath of the Meadowlands marsh near the New Jersey Turnpike between exits 15X and 16E has been extinguished, according to Amtrak.

Amtrak said at about 5:230 p.m. that the local fire department was clearing the scene, allowing rail operations to resume at restricted speeds.

Secaucus police said there had been no threat to Secaucus structures. Officials warned of ash and smoke conditions filling the surrounding proximity.

The fire started at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, said a Secaucus police officer. The cause of the fire is still unknown.

NJ Transit rail service into and out of New York Penn Station had been suspended due to Amtrak overhead wire issues, and the fire was affecting wire repair efforts, NJ Transit said. Service was restored by 5:30 p.m., but with delays of up to 90 minutes, NJ Transit said. Midtown Direct trains are being diverted to Hoboken.

NJ Transit rail tickets and passes are being crossed-honored by NJ Transit and private carrier buses and PATH at Newark Penn, Hoboken and 33rd Street in New York, the agency said. Customers should visit njtransit.com/ABC for alternate service information.
