Update: Massive brush fire near Zaca Lake in Santa Barbara County grows to 12,000 acres

A brush fire that erupted in Santa Barbara County and sent towering columns of smoke over Los Padres National Forest land had burned more than 12,000 acres by Saturday afternoon.

The Lake Fire, reported shortly before 4 p.m. Friday, was burning in rugged terrain, according to Santa Barbara County Fire Department reports. Size estimates grew from about 500 acres before nightfall to nearly 5,000 a few hours later, according to Cal Fire.

Overnight, the blaze made a significant run to the west, burning in grass, brush and timber near Zaca Lake, authorities said. Ten air tankers and three helicopters were dropping retardant and water along the ridge lines, the fire department's spokesman, Scott Safechuck, reported on social media.

The fire was mapped at 12,227 acres and was zero percent contained as of 1 p.m. Saturday, he said.

Early on, photos posted on social media showed the massive head of smoke spreading over a large area.

Firefighters had evacuated the Zaca Lake Resort in the Santa Ynez Valley, Safechuck reported. The lake is northeast of the town of Los Olivos, located along Highway 154.

Santa Barbara County's Office of Emergency Management issued an evacuation warning around 9 p.m., meaning residents should be ready to leave, for Figueroa Mountain Road from the Forest Station to Chamberlin Ranch. Authorities had also closed Figueroa Mountain Road at Midland School.

Safechuck posted late Friday night the temperature was 90 degrees and relative humidity 9% in the fire area.

Separately, a brush fire broke out in Thousand Oaks Friday afternoon near the junction of southbound Highways 101 and 23.
