Las Vegans brave extreme heat to celebrate Fourth of July

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Even as the near record-breaking heat continued to bear down on southern Nevada, hundreds headed out to celebrate the Fourth of July Thursday.

“We just have to celebrate America’s 248th birthday,” one man told 8 News Now.

The Fourth of July party was lit as hundreds braved the heat at Durango Resort and Casino across the Southwest Valley.

“We were kinda debating,” Olivia Delgado said of going out in the weather. “But we always go here, so we had to come.”

Temperatures stayed in the triple digits well past sundown, but that didn’t stop families from coming to Red Ridge Park near Warm Springs Road and El Capitan Way.

“You just get to see the beautiful fireworks,” Laycie Manabat said. “And spend time with your family.”

Many said it was essential to carry on what they called an annual summer tradition.

“I’ve been here since I was like 6, so I’m kind of used to the heat,” Johnathan Barnal said. “And every year, it’s kinda hot out here as well.”

Several people said no matter how high the mercury rises, they will always load up the grill and don their best patriotic gear to show their love for America on Independence Day.

“Everyone […] comes out,” Barnal added. “All the families and the fireworks.”

Thursday marked Durango Resort & Casino’s first Fourth of July fireworks show since the property opened in Fall 2023. It was one of several fireworks spectaculars at Station Casinos across the valley.
