Las Vegas delivery drivers, food truck workers trying to stay cool as temperatures rise
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — As many Las Vegas valley residents are trying their best to stay inside during the extreme heat, delivery drivers are keeping busy tending to orders from those who want to stay in.
Uber Eats driver Mary Jane Miller is just trying to survive in the heat. Miller delivers food part-time but said with how hot it’s been, she’s had to alternate her driving time.
“On Saturday, I’ll drive midday and then nights,” she shared.
Miller said she’s noticed more people ordering food, however, more calls don’t necessarily mean better tips.
“I’m originally from Massachusetts so I thought coming out here, I was going to be able to do Uber Eats and I’d make more money especially because of the heat, but unfortunately it hasn’t been like that,” Miller said.
While some prefer to stay in and fully take advantage of delivery services like DoorDash and Uber Eats, food truck business owner, Diana Moran said the triple-digit temperatures haven’t stopped her customers from waiting in the heat.
“We used to open earlier on the weekends around noon, but we couldn’t handle the heat so we had to push it back to opening at 7 p.m. and our customers are here waiting with us,” Moran said.
The Hibachi Time crew works side-by-side in close quarters so taking breaks and cooling down is part of their nightly routine.
“We try to stay hydrated, and we drink a lot of fluids,” Moran said. “We had to close once or twice because of the excessive heat, but we try to make it work as much as possible,” she added.
