18 people injured after Stadium of Fire firework mishap: latest report

PROVO, Utah (ABC4) — Eighteen people were injured in last week’s Stadium of Fire event after fireworks launched into the crowd, according to the latest update from the Provo Fire Department.

On Thursday, July 4, thousands of people piled into the Lavell Edwards Stadium for the annual Independence Day celebration. Near the end of the flag ceremony, there was an F-35 jet flyover and fireworks shot into the air, only some spiraled into the crowd instead.

The number of people injured was not available at first as officials contacted attendees and first responders. It was initially announced that six people were taken to the hospital for treatment.

After emailing attendees and compiling first responder reports, officials say the number of people injured stands at 18. There is a possibility this number could change as the investigation is ongoing.

“It is unfortunate this occurred, and we are thankful the injured are recovering,” Fire Marshal Lynn Schofield said.

At the time of the incident, Emory Cook, a spokesperson for the Freedom Festival, said the pyrotechnics were thoroughly checked before the show and rechecked after the incident. Cook said they are following up with those who were injured to “make sure they are okay.”

One of the people injured by the stray fireworks told ABC4 she couldn’t hear anything for a little while after she was hit.

“There was smoke coming out of my mouth, and I could taste it. It was horrible,” Mckenzie Harvey said.

Another attendee — who was sitting in a section that was hit by fireworks — said he watched a firework fly right over him and hit a man in the neck two rows back.

“He slumped over after he got hit,” Derek Blodgett said. “We thought that he died on the spot just because of how he acted.”

Blodgett said doctors in the crowd immediately rushed in to help. He said the man regained consciousness and was able to walk out with the paramedics.

In the latest update, Provo fire officials said they cannot release information on the extent of the injuries or the current conditions of those who were hurt.
