LATEST: Man shot by police now in jail; 2 Xenia officers on leave

Jul. 2—A 23-year-old man shot and wounded by Xenia police officers Sunday was booked into the Greene County Jail Tuesday evening following his release from Miami Valley Hospital.

Two Xenia police officers are on administrative leave as part of "routine procedure" related to an officer-involved shooting Sunday. The police shooting was the second within 24 hours in the Dayton area.

At roughly 7:25 a.m. Sunday, police were called to an apartment complex in the 100 block of South Orange Street in Xenia, just south of where Bellbrook Avenue dead-ends into West Second Street.

The 911 caller indicated a man was shooting a gun at the apartment complex. The manager of the Greene Manor Apartments complex told police that the individual pointed a gun at him as well, according to the initial police report.

Six Xenia police officers responded, as did a number of deputies from the Greene County Sheriff's Office. Officers saw the man point a handgun at police, and they opened fire, according to the Xenia Police Division.

The person who was shot, a 23-year-old man is facing two counts of felonious assault. The Dayton Daily News is not naming him because the charges are not yet formal. The man may face additional charges once the case is presented to a county grand jury, police said.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation was asked to conduct the criminal investigation.

The two officers involved in the shooting were placed on leave as a "routine" part of an officer-involved shooting, according to Xenia police. One has 16 years of law enforcement experience, and the other has 10 years of law enforcement experience.

"The Xenia Police Division will continue to cooperate with BCI and the Greene County Prosecutor's Office as they conduct their investigation," police said.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact BCI at 855-224-6446.
