Laurinburg man shoots mother in head, kills her dog, police say

LAURINBURG, N.C. (WBTW) — A Laurinburg man shot his mother in the head before turning the gun on her dog and killing the animal early Saturday night, police said.

Audie Ray Jacobs, 26, is facing charges of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury and felony cruelty to animals. He’s currently being held at the Scotland County Detention Center.

Officers arrived to a Gill Street home in Laurinburg about 5:40 p.m. for an unknown disturbance. When they arrived, a woman was screaming inside the home. Her mother had sustained a gunshot wound to the head and the dog was fatally shot, authorities said.

The woman was transported to Scotland Memorial Hospital and then airlifted to another facility where she remains in critical condition. Police found Jacobs around 8:30 p.m. and arrested him without incident.
