Law enforcement issue 63 citations during DWI checkpoint

DAVIDSON COUNTY — Local law enforcement issued 63 citations and arrested two people on felony drug charges during a DWI checkpoint on July 19.

Officers with the Thomasville Police Department DWI Task Force, Lexington Police Department, the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office, Denton Police Department and the N.C. State Highway Patrol conducted the multiagency event in the areas of Cotton Grove Road, Interstate 85, Fairview Drive and Interstate 285/U.S. 52 in Lexington.

During the event, officers stopped a 1988 Honda Accord on Cotton Grove Road for a traffic violation. Following a search of the vehicle, the driver, Brian Keith McDaniels of Lexington, was arrested and charged with felony possession of methamphetamine, misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia and driving while license revoked. His first court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 2.

Officers also stopped a Dodge Stratus on Cotton Grove Road. The driver, Michael Shane Cope of Lexington, was arrested and charged with felony possession of methamphetamine, misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, misdemeanor carrying a concealed gun, misdemeanor displaying a fictitious registration plate, failing to register motor vehicle and no insurance.

Officers also charged two individuals with driving while impaired and issued other citations for speeding violations, driving while license revoked, no insurance and no operator’s license.

The law enforcement departments make up the Davidson County Traffic Safety Task Force. The DWI checkpoint also included representatives with Mothers Against Drunk Driving, the Davidson County 911 Center and the North Carolina Forensic Test for Alcohol Branch Mobile Unit.

The event, which is part of the North Carolina Governor’s Highway Safety Program, is an effort to educate the motoring public on safe driving practices and discourage incidents of impaired driving, distracted driving and unsafe driving behavior.
