At least 19 tornadoes touched down in Chicago area Monday night, including 3 in the city: NWS

CHICAGO - The National Weather Service (NWS) has confirmed that at least 19 tornadoes touched down in the Chicagoland area Monday night as severe weather swept through northern Illinois and northwest Indiana.

The NWS has deployed six damage survey teams to assess the widespread destruction, with 29 potential damage paths currently under investigation. So far, the NWS has confirmed the following tornadoes:

• Sugar Grove to Aurora: EF-1

• Crestwood to Blue Island: EF-0

• Flossmoor to Thornton: EF-1

• West Town (Chicago): EF-0

• Shelby to Wheatfield Township: EF-0

• Peotone (track TBD): EF-0

• Manteno (track TBD): EF-0

• Southern Winnebago County EF-0 (exact track still TBD): EF-0

• Byron: EF-0

• Davis Junction: EF-0

• Sugar Grove to North Aurora: EF-0

• Yorkville to Naperville: EF-1

• Channahon-Manhattan-Frankfort-Matteson: EF-2

• Crest Hill to Lockport: EF-0

• Justice: EF-1

• Chicago; Near West Side to west side of The Loop: EF-1

• Chicago; Chicago Lawn to West Englewood: EF-1

• Cedar Lake to Crown Point: EF-1

• Minooka-Shorewood-Joliet: EF-1

Tragically, a 44-year-old woman from Cedar Lake, Indiana, lost her life due to the storms, according to the Lake County coroner's office.

Chicago’s O’Hare and Midway airports experienced dozens of flight cancelations on Tuesday morning.

As of 8 p.m. on Wednesday, 34,000 ComEd customers were still without power.

The Chicago Fire Department reported that there was only one serious injury in the city due to the storms — a person injured when a tree fell on their car.

The NWS teams will continue to survey the damage in the coming days to identify additional tornado tracks and assess the full extent of the storm's impact.

Additionally, the NWS announced Tuesday that six tornadoes touched down during a severe weather event Sunday night in the Chicago area.
