LIVE: Beryl expected to be hurricane again before Texas landfall

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The National Hurricane Center said it is expecting Tropical Storm Beryl to regain its hurricane status before landfall.

As of 11 a.m., Beryl had maximum sustained winds at 60 mph as it moved west-northwest at 12 mph.

Tracking the Tropics

It was said to be about 460 miles southeast of Corpus Christ, Texas.

“Tropical Storm Beryl is still looking rather disorganized after making landfall in the Yucatan as its encountering strong wind shear.” Max Defender 8 meteorologist Eric Stone said. “Beryl is expected to become a hurricane sometime Sunday as it moves to the west northwest toward the Texas coast.”

Before it hits Texas, Beryl is expected to reach category 1 strength before making landfall Monday some where near Corpus Christi. However, little change is expected Saturday, with more strengthening possible this Sunday.

A Hurricane Watch is in effect for:

  • The Texas coast from the mouth of the Rio Grande River northward to San Luis Pass

A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for:

  • The Texas coast south of Baffin Bay to the mouth of the Rio Grande River

  • The northeastern coast of mainland Mexico from Barra el Mezquital to the mouth of the Rio Grande River

A Storm Surge Watch is in effect for:

  • The Texas coast from the mouth of the Rio Grande River northward to High Island

The National Hurricane Center said it expects rainfall to reach up to 10 inches along the Texas Gulf and East Texas, although localized totals could go as high as 15 inches of rain.

“Rain and wind will move into eastern Texas and eventually into Arkansas as a weaker system,” Stone said.

Storm surge is also a threat, with the following areas expected to see water reaching these heights:

  • Baffin Bay, Texas to San Luis Pass, Texas — 3-5 ft

  • Corpus Christi Bay — 3-5 ft

  • Matagorda Bay — 3-5 ft

  • Mouth of the Rio Grande, Texas to Baffin Bay, Texas — 2-4 ft

  • San Luis Pass, Texas to High Island, Texas — 2-4 ft

  • Galveston Bay — 2-4 ft
