Tampa Police Chief speaks at town hall amid violence in New Tampa

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw spoke at Town Hall on Monday evening amid the recent violence in New Tampa over the past several days.

Chief Bercaw first discussed Florida rapper, Julio Foolio’s death over the weekend, saying officials are developing leads and are working with other agencies on the case.

They are expecting to make arrests in the near future and added that the groups involved in the rapper’s death all came from the Jacksonville area.

“Obviously the community is concerned about violent crime and that’s why we’re here to reassure them that we’re out here and we’re working together to solve these cases and hold people accountable,” Chief Bercaw said.

He then announced an arrest on Monday for another homicide at a Metro Storage Facility and is filing charges.

The Chief said investigators have persons of interest and are close to making an arrest for another murder from the Portofino Apartment Complex on Friday.

He urges anyone who has information on these recent crimes to report it to the police department.

“We are out here in full force,” Chief Bercaw said. “But we have to all work together.”

Chief Bercaw was joined by Tampa City Councilman Luis Viera at the new Tampa Community Park, located at 17302 Commerce Park Boulevard.

Viera emphasized the importance of equipping police and ensuring the safety of residents.

“Town Halls serve as an opportunity to strengthen our relationship with those we serve by developing shared approaches toward concerns in the community,” the police department said.
