Local animal shelter dedicates gazebo to volunteer veterinarian of over 30 years

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) – The Washington County Johnson City Animal Shelter dedicated a gazebo to one of its most significant volunteers on Saturday.

Dr. Sally Parker MacLane has been volunteering with the shelter for over 30 years. To show their gratitude, the staff and animals Dr. MacLane has served dedicated the shelter’s gazebo to her on Saturday.

The permanent gesture comes after years of overseeing sick, injured and surrendered animals. Tammy Davis, the shelter’s executive director, said the shelter takes in over 3,000 animals annually.

“It just seemed like the right thing to do,” Davis said. “[Dr. MacLane] has meant everything to the shelter. We could not even come up with the number of animals that she has helped. She has done so much. She has overseen the care of the animals. She [has] given rabies vaccinations. She’s done all kinds of things for the community and just really helps make sure that the animals were cared for while they were here at the shelter.”

Davis has known Dr. MacLane since they were teenagers and recognizes her generosity. She said the shelter would unlikely be able to afford her services.

“If we had to pay a veterinarian to do that for us, it would have to cost a fortune,” Davis said. “And she was so kind to dedicate for free and volunteer her time to help the animals. Well, I personally have known her since I was in high school, so I’ve known her for a very long time. And she’s just one of the most caring people and veterinarians that you could ever want to take care of your animals.”
