Long holiday weekend: UF cancels classes on July 5

The University of Florida has decided to close and cancel classes on Friday, July 5.

In the spirit of celebrating the nation’s independence, UF said, this extra day off is a perfect opportunity to enjoy time with family and friends.

“We want Gators to enjoy an extra day as we celebrate our nation’s freedom,” said UF President Ben Sasse in a news release. “More family time, more barbecue, and more fireworks. Stay safe.”

UF Health along with its hospitals, clinics and physician practices will remain open around the state.

UF said that because the July 4 holiday falls at the end of a pay cycle, all time and leave through this date should be entered and approved prior to the holiday. Holiday leave will be granted for the July 5 closure during the subsequent pay cycle.

UF encouraged its departments to plan now for the additional day’s closure. Spokeswoman Cynthia Roldan said she can’t recall any instance of UF canceling classes on July 5 in recent years.
