‘Losing her life partner’: Husband, dog dies in Yosemite getaway

TULARE COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A recently married woman is living her worst nightmare following a crash on Saturday that took the lives of her husband and their dog while on their way to Yosemite, according to a GoFundMe and the California Highway Patrol.

The newlywed couple, who were high-school sweethearts, and their dog Sky, were headed to Yosemite National Park from their home in Southern California, according to a post on GoFundMe by a family friend of the couple.

CHP says around 9 a.m. Ricardo Trevino Herrera was driving the couple up Highway 99 and approaching Terra Bella Avenue in Pixley when their Ford Explorer began to drift to the left and onto the dirt shoulder. Herrera tried to correct and steered the pick-up back to the right, but it flipped over across the traffic lanes before finally coming to rest on its roof on a grass embankment.

Officers say several witnesses rushed to the scene, helped to upright the Ford, and attempted to remove the passengers. Herrera sustained minor injuries and refused treatment, but his two passengers were transported to Kaweah Health Medical Center in Visalia via ground and air ambulances.

The right rear passenger, 26-year-old Ally Giesen, sustained major injuries. According to the GoFundMe, she is in stable condition and is receiving care for a skull fracture, a small but stable brain bleed, and broken and fractured bones in her right arm, wrist, hand, neck, back, and face.

The California Highway Patrol says Ally’s husband, 26-year-old Marcus Giesen, succumbed to his injuries and died hours after arriving at the hospital. According to the GoFundMe, their 2-year-old dog Sky was also killed in the crash.

Neither alcohol nor drugs were a factor in this crash, CHP says.

“In addition to the heartache of losing her life partner, Ally is facing a long recovery to be made physically whole again. As if the devastating tasks have not been enough to navigate, the process is made more difficult by the fact that Ally is being treated hundreds of miles from her home in Los Angeles.”

According to the GoFundMe, Ally’s and Marcus’ parents have traveled nearly 2,000 miles from Minnesota to be with her. To view or donate to the GoFundMe, click here.
