Louisiana woman pleads guilty to 2023 Baton Rouge bank robbery

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — An Abbeville woman pleaded guilty to bank robbery in connection to an October 2023 Baton Rouge bank robbery.

According to U.S. Attorney Ronald C. Gathe Jr., Jazmine Johnnie, 23, of Abbeville, pled guilty before Chief Judge Shelly D. Dick to bank robbery.

On Oct. 9, 2023, Johnnie drove a Dodge Challenger, which was rented, to the branch location of JPMorgan Chase Bank, 7346 Highland Road. According to a U.S. Department of Justice news release, Johnnie reportedly wore sweatpants, a sweatshirt, eyeglasses and a blue surgical-style mask over her mouth.

During Johnnie’s admissions made during her guilty plea, she stated she “spoke with a teller saying she would leave the bank and return the next day.” She left the bank and drove away, according to the DOJ.

Johnnie returned to the same bank on Oct. 10, 2023. According to the DOJ, as Johnnie walked into the bank’s lobby, she stopped at the desk and wrote a note on the back of a blank withdrawal slip.

After she wrote the note, Johnnie made her way to the teller station, where she would slip the note to the teller. According to the DOJ, after she handed the teller the note, Johnnie put her purse down and revealed the screen of her phone to the teller. Her phone displayed a timer that was counting down.

“The teller ultimately gave Johnnie $3,500 in cash. After putting the cash into her purse, Johnnie exited the bank, got back into the Challenger and drove away,” per the DOJ release.

According to the DOJ, a warrant was issued for Johnnie’s arrest. Johnnie ultimately surrendered to the police and admitted to the robbery during a post-arrest interview.
