Lubbock judge revokes reckless driver's probation, hands down 10 year prison sentence

A Lubbock District Judge sentenced to 10 years in prison on Tuesday, July 2, a 24-year-old year old habitual reckless driver, who was initially placed on probation three years ago for admitting to driving recklessly and causing a crash that killed an 84-year-old woman.

Ehvan Reyna appeared in the 140th District Court for a hearing on the Lubbock County District Attorney's motion to revoke his probation.

Reyna faced up to 10 years in prison after he was placed on probation on June 1, 2021, for a manslaughter conviction in the May 24, 2020 death of June Linker near the intersection of 87th Street and University Avenue.

Lubbock crash investigations found evidence that Reyna was driving his Chevrolet Camaro at 90 mph in the northbound lanes of University Avenue before crashing into Linker's Toyota Camry, which was turning east from 87th Street.

Reyna reportedly told investigators that he accelerated to get away from the traffic around him. However, he said he saw Linker and applied his brakes, which failed, and he collided into her. Crash data obtained from Reyna’s Camaro showed the vehicle slowed to about 87 mph about 2 seconds before the crash.

A warrant for Reyna's arrest was served on July 9, 2020 and he was released on bond about a week later.

As part of Reyna's conditions of probation, he was ordered to spend 165 days of shock jail time in the Lubbock County Detention Center. Shock jail time does not count toward his 10-year prison sentence.

Prosecutors filed an application to revoke his probation after he was arrested on May 12, 2022 -- a little more than six months after completing his shock jail time -- for reckless driving.

Lubbock police motorcycle officer Trey Mayer, told the court during the hearing that he was patrolling in the 5400 block of the Marsha Sharp Freeway and heard the sound of a loud revving. Moments later he observed a black and white Ford Mustang barreling down the freeway access road eastbound.

Mayer said he clocked the Mustang traveling about 90 mph in a 50 mph zone in front of a UMC EMS station.

"(Reyna) had a wanton and willful disregard for the safety of others by driving in front of the EMS station at 90 mph," Mayer wrote in his report.

The officer took off after Reyna, who stopped in the 3700 block of Belmont Avenue, and arrested him.

Reyna was booked in the Lubbock County Detention Center where he was released on bond.

Meanwhile, prosecutors filed a motion to revoke his probation two months later.
