A magnitude 3.4 earthquake in DeKalb County felt in Chicago area overnight

A magnitude 3.4 earthquake was recorded at 2:53 a.m. Monday near Somonauk, which is about 60 miles southwest of Chicago. The earthquake occurred at a depth of about 6 miles.

According to the Illinois State Geological Survey, earthquakes occur in Illinois about once every year. A 3.8-magnitude earthquake in Indiana on June 17, 2021, but was also felt by Chicago residents. The last damaging earthquake happened in downstate Illinois in June 1987.
