Man accused in death of Tulane officer sentenced to life
NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The man convicted of murdering a Tulane police officer in 2021 was sentenced to life on Friday, June 28.
John Shallerhorn was accused of shooting and killing Martinus Mitchum outside of a basketball game at George Washington Carver High School.

On Feb. 26, 2021, Mitchum was working security detail and was attempting to stop an argument involving Shallerhorn, who refused to wear a mask when entering the gym and was denied entry.
Previous reports state that as Mitchum attempted to de-escalate the situation, Shallerhorn pulled out a gun and shot him.

He was taken to a hospital where he later died from his wounds.
Shallerhorn’s trial began on April 3 and faced charges of first-degree murder.
Additionally, Shallerhorn was also convicted of armed robbery.
