Man on bicycle killed after being hit by car in Gonzales
GONZALES, La. (BRPROUD) — A bicyclist has died days after being hit by a car in Ascension Parish.
According to Louisiana State Police, on July 1, troopers were responding to a crash near La Highway 429 and Martin Road.
During the investigation, police learned Chant Parker, 39, of St. Amant, was riding a bicycle headed east on LA 429 while a 2023 Volkswagen Atlas was also headed east. The driver of the Volkswagen attempted to pass Parker on his left and Parker entered the path of the Volkswagen, causing the Volkswagen to strike the back of the bicycle, police say.
Parker was reportedly ejected from the bicycle. He was taken to a local hospital to be treated for serious injuries. According to authorities, on July 5, troopers were notified that Parker had died of his injuries.

The driver of the Volkswagen was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was uninjured. Police do not suspect impairment was a factor in the crash but standard toxicology samples were taken from the driver and Parker.
This is an ongoing investigation.
