Man charged in death of 13-year-old Angel Salguero Diaz found shot in North Linden alley

Columbus police have charged a 20-year-old man with murder in connection with the April shooting death of a teenager.

Jaivon Jones, of the Southeast Side, was arrested Thursday. He is scheduled to appear Friday in Franklin County Municipal Court.

Jones is accused of killing 13-year-old Angel Salguero Diaz.

Columbus police received a ShotSpotter alert around 8:35 p.m. April 14 from the area of Medina Avenue and East Hudson Street. Officers were unable to find any evidence of a shooting or any victims, according to court records.

Around 10:15 p.m. that same day, Diaz was found shot in the back in an alley behind homes on the 1300 block of East Hudson Street in North Linden. Diaz died at the scene.

In the days after Diaz's death, police asked for information about a SUV whose occupants may have witnessed the shooting.

Police allege in court records that an investigation determined Jones was driving an SUV at the scene and that video from the area shows a muzzle blast coming from the vehicle.

The ShotSpotter alert information also recorded the gunfire as moving about 15 mph, which is consistent with the video showing the SUV moving at the time the shot was fired, court records say.

Police allege that Jones admitted to detectives to driving the vehicle at the scene of the shooting but denied that he or anyone else in his vehicle fired any shots.
