Man dead after chase, shooting involving Pierce County deputies on Monday afternoon

When Pierce County sheriff’s deputies attempted to contact a criminal suspect Monday afternoon in Graham, it led to the shooting death of the man and minor injuries to a deputy.

The incident began sometime before 3 p.m. when deputies attempted to contact the man in the 25200 of Mountain Highway East, according to Sheriff’s Department spokesperson deputy Carly Cappetto.

Deputies attempted to use tire-puncturing stop sticks on the suspect’s vehicle, but it fled the scene, striking a deputy.

A pursuit began, which soon headed east on 260th Street and then to 70th Avenue East where it stopped.

“The suspect exited the vehicle and fled to a house at the 25900 block of 70th Avenue East,” Cappetto said. “At (2:57 p.m.), deputies reported shots fired.”

The man was declared dead after life-saving measures were attempted, she said.

It’s unknown how many deputies fired their guns or if the suspect had a firearm.

PCFIT (Pierce County Force Investigation Team) will now take over the investigation, Cappetto said.

The Sheriff’s Department referred The News Tribune to PCFIT for details of the suspect’s alleged criminal history.
