Man dead in officer-involved shooting in Manchester

Jun. 28—An officer-involved shooting in Manchester left a man dead Friday following a struggle, authorities said.

An officer on patrol shortly after 9:30 a.m. approached the man on Bridge Street to talk with him, according to reports; the man said he had a gun.

"The officer instructed him to then keep his hands visible, however, the male reached into his pocket for the firearm," according to a news release from the Attorney General's Office.

"A struggle ensued, during which the male fired what was later determined to be a pistol and the officer returned fire."

The man, whose name will be disclosed following an autopsy, was hit by gunfire and died at a local hospital, authorities said.

An autopsy was scheduled for Friday evening.

The officer involved, who was not physically injured, was wearing a body-worn camera, which recorded the event, the news release said.

"That footage is currently being preserved and will be reviewed," authorities said.

Conducting the investigation is the New Hampshire Department of Justice with the assistance of the New Hampshire State Police Major Crimes Unit.

The name of the officer using deadly force will not be disclosed until formal interviews take place, which is expected in the next five to 10 business days.
