On May 17, around 8:35 a.m., Metro police responded to a report of a shooting in the area of North Eastern Avenue and Tulip Lane near Bonanza Road. The 911 caller said that a man in a white car shot at her two times.

The victim told police that she was exiting U.S. 95 at Eastern Avenue and while at a red light, she noticed the driver of the car behind her was flipping her off and yelling, “[Expletive], pull over!” She also noticed that the driver was agitated and fidgeting while looking at his lap, the report said.

The victim started to drive away but the white car began to follow her which resulted in both cars traveling at a high rate of speed northbound on Eastern. The victim slowed down in hopes that the car would pass her but the car just stopped ahead of her. The victim stopped and put her car in reverse to turn right and get out of the area, police said.

As the victim accelerated to turn, she saw the driver reach his arm out of the car while pointing a silver handgun at her. The victim then saw a flash and heard a loud sound. She ducked as low as she could and heard another gunshot. When she got up she saw the other car “casually driving away,” the report said.

The victim got the suspect’s license plate before stopping to wait for police.

Police ran the license plate and discovered that based on prior law enforcement encounters with the vehicle, an associate of the owner of the vehicle was identified as Bess.

Police spoke to the owner of the vehicle who initially said that her boyfriend, Bess, had the vehicle and she knew nothing of the shooting. However, she later told police that she was sleeping in the passenger seat of the car the sound of gunshots awoke her, and saw a handgun on Bess’s lap.

A record check of Bess showed that he was previously convicted of carrying a concealed firearm in February 2023.

Bess was arrested on June 28 and was taken to the Clark County Detention Center where he is being held on no bail. He is scheduled to appear in court on July 15.
