Man gets 20 years for raping teen

BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. (WSPA) – An Asheville man will spend 20 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to statutory rape on Tuesday.

According to the Buncombe County District Attorney’s Office, Christopher Murray Upshaw pleaded guilty to a charge of statutory rape of a child under age of 15.

A judge sentenced him to 240 – 348 months in prison.

In March 2023, the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office and DSS began investigating reports of a sexual assault involving an underage victim. Officials were able to identify and arrest Upshaw through the investigation.

According to the district attorney’s office, Upshaw was previously convicted of felony child abuse in 2011.

The judge also ordered Upshaw to register as a sexual offender for 30 years, and have no contact with the victim for the remainder of his life.
