Man who pleaded guilty to killing wife in Horry County in 2021 asks for new trial

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — A man who pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter last year in the killing of his wife has filed a post-conviction relief application asking for a new trial.

Donald Gibel was sentenced on June 26, 2023, to 20 years in prison after his guilty plea. He was sentenced in the death of his wife, Tiffany Guinn, 49. Police found Guinn dead in the bedroom of a home on Longhorn Drive in March 2021.

The application was filed Wednesday in Horry County General Sessions Court. It claims Gibel was denied the right to effective assistance of counsel.

The application further claimed that Gibel’s counsel “failed to investigate, develop and present evidence of the history of domestic violence” by Guinn against him.

Gibel asks in the application for the court to vacate his conviction and sentence and to order a new trial.
