Man shot during another weekend fight in Naperville, police say

For the second consecutive Sunday, someone was shot in Naperville as the result of a fight.

Police responding to a 5:12 a.m. call about a gun being fired in a parking lot in the 1500 block of Watkins Lane arrived to find the three people involved gone but evidence confirming someone was shot located, a Naperville Police Department news release said. The address is at the Grand Reserve of Naperville apartments off Ogden Avenue.

It was later learned the shooting victim, a Bolingbrook man, took himself to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, the report said.

No information on what might have prompted the fight, if the victim knew the other two people or if there are people of interest being sought or in custody was released but police said they do not believe it was a random act and the shooter does not pose a “threat to the community.”

The case remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call 630-548-2955 or email Napervillecrimetips@naperville.il.us.

A week earlier, on June 23, a 30-year-old woman was found shot about 2:45 p.m. on a porch in the 1000 block of Iroquois Avenue, near Ogden Avenue and Naperville Road, police said.

The victim and suspect were acquaintances who got into a dispute that led to the woman being shot. Police would not disclose details about how the pair knew each other, what provoked the fight, whether the suspect is a man or woman or why the victim ended up on a porch where she did not live.

No arrest in the case had been announced as of Monday morning.

The Sunday shooting is the city’s third since April 16, when a robbery in the 2500 block of Leach Drive, near Plainfield-Naperville Road and 87th Street, led to a 22-year-old Naperville man being injured.

A 16-year-old has been arrested in the case but the second suspect remains at large. Police said the victim knew both suspects but they have not released details on the robbery or why the man was shot.
