Man suffers medical event, dies after jumping into Moose Pond in Denmark

Jul. 15—DENMARK — An 80-year-old man died Sunday at Moose Pond after suffering a medical event, the Warden Service announced.

At 4:15 p.m., deputies from the Oxford County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a man struggling in the water a significant distance offshore near 30 Lochmont Drive, according to a statement from the Oxford County Sheriff's Office.

When authorities arrived, they discovered that the man, who had jumped off a boat and asked bystanders for help when he began to struggle, was unresponsive and not breathing. He was pulled from the water and rescuers began CPR. He was transported by boat to a nearby launch on Route 302 on the causeway in Bridgton, according to the release.

Despite lifesaving efforts, the man died at the scene, the statement said.

The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office, the Bridgton Police Department, fire departments from Denmark and Bridgton, and United Ambulance Service all provided assistance.

Oxford County deputies and the Maine Warden Service are investigating the incident. At this time, law enforcement is withholding the man's identity until proper notifications can be made to his family, the Sheriff's Office said.

The Oxford Sheriff's expressed appreciation to the bystanders who came to the man's aid and tried to save his life.
