Mandatory evacuations in place for French Fire in Mariposa County, deputies say

MARIPOSA COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Areas affected by the French Fire in Mariposa County are prompting mandatory evacuations, the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office said.

According to Cal Fire, the French Fire in Mariposa County started around 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. It has burned about 400 acres as of Thursday night.

As of Thursday night, sheriff’s officials say mandatory fire evacuations are in place for the following areas:

  • Hospital Road- From Silver Creek to the End (up the mountain)

  • Grosjean Road

  • Alta Vista Road

  • Avoca Vale

  • Old Highway North from Highway 140 to 10th Street

  • Slaughterhouse Road

  • Williams Road

  • Hospital Road

  • Smith Road from Highway 140 to Hospital Road

  • Campbell Road

  • Pine Street

  • Dexter View

  • All of Jones Street

  • Bullion Street- East Side Only from Highway 140 to the end of the town area. This includes all side roads that run between Jones and Bullion including 3rd Street – 13th Street

  • Mariposa Street

  • Trabucco Street

Evacuation warnings are in place for the following areas:

  • Parts of Highway 140

  • Lakeview Road

  • Stockton Creek Area

  • Slaughterhouse from Highway 140 to Allred Road

  • Allred Road from Slaughterhouse to Highway 49 South

Highway 140 is closed from Smith Road to West Whitlock.

The JCF Hospital in Mariposa, Yosemite Inn, and Quality Inn have been put in a shelter-in-place status, sheriff’s officials said on Thursday night.

Deputies say they were in these areas making door-to-door notifications. Those who live in the area and do not feel safe are encouraged to leave and do not wait to be told to evacuate.

A temporary evacuation point is located at the New Life Christian Church at 5083 Cole Road in Mariposa. Officials with the Red Cross say volunteers will provide evacuees with safe refuge from the wildfire, water, snacks, and additional resources. Anyone who needs assistance is encouraged to come to the shelter.

As of Thursday evening, there is no information regarding the cause of the fire.
