Married couple recovering after Rocky Mount crash during memorial motorcycle ride

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (WNCN) — A married couple are recovering after they were airlifted to a hospital following a crash during a Nash County memorial motorcycle ride in Rocky Mount Saturday afternoon.

The wreck happened around noon as more than 300 bikers were heading west on U.S. 64 just east of Interstate 95, according to riders and the Rocky Mount Police Department.

Near N. Winstead Avenue, a motorcycle with the woman and man crashed and they were thrown from the bike. The pair were airlifted to Greenville with “multiple serious injuries,” police said.

A man riding the couple in the Big Mike Memorial Ride Saturday searched out the pair, Amy and Linwood Mercer, and visited them at the hospital in Greenville Sunday.

The couple, who are from Greenville, were alert and talking, Scott King told CBS 17 News.

Linwood said “to tell everyone that he and his wife are going to bounce back from this nasty wreck,” said King, of Tarboro.

King said both seemed in good spirits but “they both have a long road ahead.”

The ride Saturday from Flying Iron Harley Davidson in Rocky Mount was for Michael “Big Mike” Ray Bullock, 57, who died on June 5. A funeral was held for Bullock of Fountain about three weeks ago and the ride on Saturday was to honor him.

“He was loved by so many,” King said about Bullock, who had thousands turn out for his funeral on June 14.

It’s not clear how the crash happened Saturday afternoon. King who was near the crash said a car cut off a deputy who was leading the motorcycle ride.

The Rocky Mount Police Department said their Traffic Enforcement and Crash Reconstruction Unit is investigating.

“Please continue to pray for” the couple, King wrote on Facebook. “I sure lost some sleep over them last night being we were so close behind them in the wreck.”
