MASH Camp at Mercy Joplin lets high school students get hands-on healthcare experience

JOPLIN, Mo. — Some local high school students are getting hands-on experience in the healthcare field.

Wednesday was the second day of a “MASH Camp” at Mercy Hospital Joplin. Tuesday, the kids spent time at KCU-Joplin. This camp is a partnership with the Southwest Missouri Area Health Education Center and offers students a behind-the-scenes look at various healthcare positions.

Students toured various hospital facilities, including emergency rooms, emergency vehicles, operating rooms, and imaging rooms. They also received training on applying stitches and staples.

“It’s always a good opportunity and a good experience for students to have if they can see something and they can actually do it. They might understand, ‘Hey, this is something that I can do for the rest of my life,’ or they may understand, ‘This is something I do not want to do for the rest of my life,’ and both are equally important. But it is good to let them know that there are different options out there instead of just being a doctor or nurse,” said Trisha Riggs, Director of the Southwest Missouri Area Health Education Center.

Riggs hopes the students can find what they love doing through the camp. The students represent Joplin, Carthage, Purdy, Webb City, and other surrounding areas.
