McAlester man charged after shooting at woman

Jul. 2—A McAlester man was arrested and charged after police said he fired at a woman who was trying to get away from him after he said he was going to handcuff and pistol whip her.

Court records show Joshua Jeffrey, 34, was charged with shooting with intent to kill and possession of a firearm after former felony conviction.

A probable cause affidavit filed in the case states officers were called June 28 to the area near the intersection of South Main Street and West Cherokee Avenue for a report of a man shooting at a woman who was attempting to get in a truck and leave.

Officers responded to the area with another officer meeting the woman and the driver of the truck at a location away from where the shooting took place where she told officers Jeffrey shot at her and gave a description of his clothing, the report states.

A man who matched the given description, later identified as Jeffrey, was located near the area where the gunshots were reported and was detained, the affidavit states.

During a search of Jeffrey, officers found two bottles of vodka, a needle, a pair of handcuffs with a key, two cellphones, a wallet, and a vape, according to the report.

A spent shell casing was found underneath the awning of a business located at South Main Street and West Cherokee Avenue and the woman who reported the shooting positively identified Jeffrey as the shooter, the affidavit states.

According to the report, officers began searching the area for a handgun and found a weapon hidden underneath a mattress approximately 40 yards from where the spent shell casing was found. The weapon was found with one live round in the chamber and two in the magazine and matched the spent casing.

The woman told officers Jeffrey is violent when he drinks and he told her he planned to handcuff and pistol whip her and that is when she ran towards a truck yelling 'he is going to kill me' and was let in by the driver, the report states.

The driver of the truck said he looked back and noticed a silhouette of a person raise his arm and point a gun at them before firing a single shot, according to the affidavit.

No injuries were reported from the shooting.

Jeffrey was transported to the Pittsburg County Jail without incident where he remained as of Monday on a $250,000 bond, according to jail records.
