Merced County Coroner identifies man shot and killed in Atwater
The Merced County Sheriff Coroner’s Office has identified a man shot and killed in Atwater earlier this month as 32-year-old Alex Martin Canela, according to Deputy Michael Domingue.
Officers responded to a report of shots fired shortly before 11 p.m. on July 15 and located Canela suffering from multiple gunshot wounds at the intersection of Packers Street and Cedar Avenue. Authorities said first responders attempted life-saving measures, and Canela was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
According to Atwater police, the shooting death is the second recorded homicide in the city in 2024.
