Three political leaders in Michigan are slated to speak as former President Donald Trump formally accepts the Republican Party’s presidential nomination this week as the Republican National Convention (RNC) kicks off its convention Monday in Milwaukee.

The convention comes two days after Trump survived an assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania. Many elected officials in Michigan have condemned the violence. Two attendees were wounded and another was killed, identified by Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro Sunday as firefighter Corey Comperatore.

During the RNC’s four-day conference, dozens of speakers are slated to speak including members of Trump’s family and his newly announced running mate, U.S. Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio). Other reported finalists to be Trump’s vice president, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum also are scheduled to speak.

Michiganders have also made the list to speak at the convention: U.S. Rep. John James (R-Shelby Twp.), former U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers (R-White Lake), who’s running for U.S. Senate, and former Republican presidential candidate Perry Johnson.

After shots were fired at the Trump rally Saturday in Butler, Penn. all three men slated to speak at the convention took to social media to offer their support for Trump.

Rogers, who has secured Trump’s endorsement in the U.S. Senate race, posted on X after the shooting Saturday saying, “Kristi [his wife] and I are thankful for the quick response from first responders to this despicable act and grateful to hear President Trump is safe and well after this assassination attempt. Our condolences are with the family of the innocent life taken yesterday, and all those who were injured. God bless America.”

Johnson ran unsuccessful camapigns for governor of Michigan in 2022 and president in 2024, deciding to instead give his support to Trump in the race. After the shooting he posted on X saying, “You can’t stop Trump. For him, America always comes first. He is resilient. Politics aside, America should be praying for President Trump.”

James, a longtime Trump supporter, posted on X after the shooting, “They tried to silence him. They tried to jail him. Now they’ve tried to kill him,” posting again on Monday saying, “Good morning. President Trump courageously asked us to fight and fight we will. I believe in my heart that land is still the United States of America – where the best is yet to come!”
