LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — President Joe Biden made an historic announcement this Sunday that he is dropping out of the 2024 presidential race. On the same day, a new EPIC-MRA poll of active and likely Michigan voters went public.

One question asked in the statewide poll, conducted from July 13-17, is particularly relevant now:

“If Joe Biden were to step aside and not continue his campaign to be reelected as President, which of the following candidates that have been mentioned as possible replacements should be nominated by the Democratic Party?”

Democrats are circulating several high profile names as potential presidential alternatives including Whitmer, the co-chair of the Biden-Harris campaign who is releasing a memoir titled "True Gretch," that hints at her political future this week. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer turned out to be the third-most-popular response to that question in the July statewide poll. Vice President Kamala Harris came in second, after the response that “Someone else” should be the nominee.

One other Michigan resident besides Whitmer also was on the list–Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg came in with 4% of the positive responses. Buttigieg has his permanent residence in Traverse City.

"Not only will these new standards save Americans money at the pump every time they fill up, they will also decrease harmful pollution and make America less reliant on foreign oil," Buttigieg said. The responses to the poll question were as follows:

20% Someone Else

19% Vice President Kamala Harris

17% Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer

11% Former First Lady Michelle Obama

6% California Governor Gavin Newsom

4% Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg

2% Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro

2% New Jersey Senator Cory Booker

1% Illinois Governor JB Pritzker

12% Undecided/Refused

The poll of 600 active and likely voters was conducted by EPIC-MRA from July 13-17. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 4%.
