Millersport news: Cruisin' on the Commons this Friday at Lions Park

The Millersport Sweet Corn Festival Committee will host Cruisin’ on the Commons at the Millersport Lions Park, Home of the Sweet Corn Festival, from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 21. Registration will run from 5 to 7 p.m. for cars, trucks and motorcycles. Registration is $15. per vehicle. All are invited to join in the fun, food, music and trophies. The categories of vehicles are: 2005 to 2024, 1985 to 2004, 1965 to 1984, 1945 to 1964, and Pre-1944. There will also be prizes for Best of Show and Top Choice. There will be drawings for 50/50 and door prizes. For more information call 614-562-1919 or 740-953-1521. Proceeds will benefit Millersport Lions supported charities.

Renaissance awards

Congratulations to the Millersport Junior/Senior High School Renaissance Award recipients for the 2023-2024 school year. These students demonstrated high academic achievement, great attendance and behavior throughout the school year.

Lions Club

Ohio Lions packed the ballroom at the Hilton Double Tree in Worthington for the State Convention May 17-18.

Millersport brought home the Kindness Matters Service Award for the lock-down survival kits that the club assembled and delivered for every classroom at Walnut Township Schools in 2022-2023. This award was only given to 38 of the 49,000 clubs in the world. Every member of the Millersport Club will receive a Kindness Matters Service Award medal in appreciation and celebration.

Ohio Lions donated over 2200 pounds of peanut butter for campus-based food pantries. The Millersport Lions added 158 pounds of peanut butter to the peanut butter mountain.

2nd VDG Elect Tamarra Parker-Stephens received several awards at the convention. She received a letter of appreciation for her outstanding work with the Global Action Team.

Lion Kris Keller was surprised with an award from International 1st Vice President Fabricio Oliveira of an International Leadership Medal.

Retired teachers

Several retirees of the Walnut Township Local Schools attended the June 11th meeting of the Fairfield County Retired Teachers’ Association. The luncheon was held at Cheers Chalet. President Tim Shumaker welcomed the group on National Corn on the Cob Day, making mention of the Millersport Lions Club Sweet Corn Festival coming up in August.

Following lunch entertainment was provided by Debbie Wright.

The June meeting has been designated as scholarship collection month with a bakeless bake sale. Money members would spend buying baking supplies will go toward the scholarships and active teacher grants. The two scholarship winners were Devan Lewellen, a graduate of Lancaster High School and Emma Thomas, a graduate of Liberty Union High School. Devan is a middle childhood math and science major at Ohio University. Emma is teaching math at the Bremen Middle School. The Teacher Grant recipients are Kerri Rodenbaugh and Crystal Swick. Kerri teaches Art at Mt. Pleasant and Tarhe (K-5) in Lancaster and Crystal is the Business Teacher (9-12) at Fairfield Union.

The next meeting of the Fairfield County Retired Teachers Association will be at noon Sept. 10 at Cheers Chalet. Meals must be reserved and cost $18.50. Retired teachers who are not on the calling list and would like to attend the September meeting may call Marilene Culp at 740-654-5499 for reservations and more information.

Senior citizens

The Fairfield Beach Senior Citizens met June 12 at the Millersport American Legion Hall on Canal Drive in Millersport. President Carol Kitzmiller opened with the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. Ken Keener offered the prayer before the potluck lunch.

Following lunch President Kitzmiller conducted the business meeting. Liz Sanders and Ruthanne Hammel were recognized with June birthdays. The summer outing was discussed. Door prizes were won by Mary Dupler, Debbie Gant, Marty Holtz, Carol King, Ruthanne Hammel and Drenille Keener.
