New Mississippi drivers licenses are out. What it looks like & how to get one in South MS

Mississippi began issuing a new drivers license on Monday with a fresh design that features the state’s flag and a guitar.

The new license also features the Mississippi outline and music notes.

The Mississippi Department of Public Safety, which regulates drivers licenses in the state, announced the design last month. The agency’s Driver Service Bureau introduced the design, which is meant to showcase the “various iconic elements of Mississippi,” according to a press release.

“This new design does a great job capturing the special spirit of Mississippi,” Gov. Tate Reeves said in the release. “I hope Mississippians in every corner of our state carry it with pride.”

The Mississippi Department of Public Safety and Attorney General Lynn Fitch hosted a “public safety summit” in May and unveiled the design, the release said.

The new license moves the license ID number, birth date and license expiration date from the top right of the license to the left of the card, near the photo.

How to get new Mississippi drivers license design

Drivers licenses with the old design are still valid unless they are expired.

Starting July 1, residents who want the new design can purchase a renewal license through the Department of Public Safety’s license renewal form, or at a nearby drivers license station.

It costs $24 to renew a license.

Residents can renew a license online until one year after the expiration date. Renewals made after the date of expiration cost an additional $1.

Online renewals must pay $1.50 for postage and a “convenience fee” that can vary based on the purchase, according to the Department of Public Safety.

Residents also cannot renew a license online twice in a row. If a resident renews a license online, they cannot renew online again until they have made a renewal in person.
