KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A competitive race is shaping up for the GOP nomination for Missouri governor, and on this week’s edition of “4 The People,” we’re joined by our first candidate of the campaign season. Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft joins us to discuss his candidacy, and his views on key issues including a proposal to phase out the state income tax, his views on the failed childcare tax credits championed by Governor Mike Parson, and whether the state should chip in money for Chiefs and Royals stadium proposals.

Invitations are also out to Lt. Gov. Mike Kehoe and St. Sen. Bill Eigel, who are the two other chief opponents in the Republican primary to replace the term-limited GOP Gov. Parson.

Then, Cornell Ellis, the executive director of “Brothers Liberating Our Community” (BLOC) shares his organization’s efforts to get more Black teachers into classrooms, especially men. The group mentors high school students who have shown an interest in teaching, and provides scholarship support and programs that are designed to help retain those who do enter the profession.

Ellis notes that studies have shown Black students are more likely to succeed if they have access to Black educators.
