Mobile County Public Schools adds Wi-Fi to school buses

MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. (WKRG) — The Mobile County school board has approved a $225,888 grant to add Wi-Fi to its school buses for the 2024-2025 school year.

“It was an opportunity that we took advantage of, and I think it’s going to be very helpful,” school board member Dr. Reginald Crenshaw said.

Crenshaw says the addition of Wi-Fi on the buses will increase safety. Soon, the school system will be able to indicate if a child is getting on the right bus for the right route.

“Also, students can do their homework last minute on the bus,” Crenshaw said.

The money comes from an e-grant program that only allows the money to be used for things like Wi-Fi and phones.

Parents like Ashley Waters are concerned about how the school system spends money.

“Before they done anything in Mobile County Public Schools they should’ve made sure that the kids have AC on the buses,” Waters said.

Crenshaw says that it would not be enough even if they could spend the grant money on AC for the school buses.

“20% of the $200,000 wouldn’t probably do more than two buses,” Crenshaw said. “So, it’s about waiting to get all funds available to do it.”
