With summer break ending and Illinois students getting ready to return to school, some might wonder about the quality of the education awaiting them. How does Illinois’ education system stack up against the rest of the United States. Which Illinois cities are the most educated? Which are the least educated?

In a recent study, the personal finance company WalletHub analyzed data on different states to determine the most and least educated cities in the United States. The study measured the 150 largest metropolitan statistical areas across the United States. The areas were measured on 11 components dealing with education, and data was collected from U.S. Census Bureau, GreatSchools.org, Education Equality Index, and WalletHub research.

Here is what they found, including in Illinois:

Most and least educated cities in Illinois

Chicago was the only Illinois city to place in the top 50 nationwide, with the Chicago metropolitan area ranking 29th. However, the St. Louis metroplex, which includes Illinois communities, placed 47th.

WalletHub ranked Peoria at 96th. Rockford was Illinois’ lowest-ranked city, placing 132nd. The Davenport-Moline-Rock Island metroplex placed 110th.

Most educated cities nationwide

Ann Arbor, Michigan placed first out of 150 cities. It earned first-place and fourth-place rankings, respectively, for educational attainment and No. 4 for quality of education and the attainment gap.

Methodology for study

Educational attainment was weighed 80 points. Quality of education and the attainment gap was weighed at 20 points. All scores were based on a 100 point scale. The closer to 100, the better the education in that area.

Educational attainment:

  • Share of adults aged 25 and older with a high school diploma or higher

  • Share of adults aged 25 and older with at least some college experience or an associate's degree or higher

  • Share of adults aged 25 and older with a bachelor's degree or higher

  • Share of adults aged 25 and older with a graduate or professional degree

  • Average quality of universities

  • Enrolled students in top 857 universities per capita

  • Number of summer learning opportunities per capita
