Motorcyclist killed at I-25 and MLK Bypass identified

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) has identified a motorcyclist who was killed after losing control of his motorcycle at the MLK Bypass exit from southbound I-25 in July.

According to CSPD, officers originally responded to the MLK Bypass exit ramp from southbound I-25 shortly after 1:45 p.m. on Thursday, July 11 on a report of a single motorcycle crash. When officers arrived, they found the motorcycle rider, later identified as 65-year-old Karl Maisel, suffering from serious, life-threatening injuries.

CSPD said Maisel was taken to the hospital where he died of his injuries. CSPD’s Major Crash Team responded to assume the investigation, which revealed from witness accounts that Maisel lost control of his motorcycle while taking the exit ramp, and no other cars were involved.

According to CSPD, this is the 31st traffic fatality in Colorado Springs in 2024. At the same time in 2023, there had been 25 fatalities.
