Motorcyclist killed, another injured after Highway 88 head-on crash in Northern California

A head-on collision on Memorial Day between two motorcyclists in Northern California’s Sierra Nevada mountains left one rider dead and another wounded with major injuries, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Marcus Canizales, 50, of Hayward, was riding west around 5 p.m. Monday on his 2007 Harley Davidson V-Rod on Highway 88, near Red Lake in Alpine County, said Officer Ruth Loehr, a spokeswoman for the CHP’s South Lake Tahoe office.

Witnesses on the scene reported to the CHP that Canizales “made an unsafe pass” across double solid yellow lines and then collided head-on with another motorcyclist, Loehr said.

Canizales and the other motorcyclist, identified as a 52-year-old man from Gardnerville, Nevada, were both ejected from their motorcycles. The 52-year-old, who was riding a 2007 BMW motorcycle, suffered major injuries and was taken to Barton Memorial Hospital in South Lake Tahoe, Loehr said.

Both riders were wearing helmets, she said.
