Apple Valley woman killed in Lucerne Valley head-on motorcycle crash

An Apple Valley woman died after her motorcycle was struck head-on by a car that had crossed into the opposing lane to pass traffic on Old Woman Springs Road in Lucerne Valley on Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

Kristina Kimsey, 42, was killed in the wreck, according to San Bernardino County coroner's records.

The incident took place about about 6:25 p.m. along the road, also known as Highway 247, at Visalia Avenue, according to California Highway Patrol logs.

Kimsey was riding north along the highway on a 2000 Harley-Davidson motorcycle just prior to the impact, CHP officials said. A 2020 Toyota Corolla was headed south, being driven by a 43-year-old Apple Valley man.

"This crash occurred when the driver of the Toyota drove to the left of the solid yellow line to overtake slower moving traffic, directly into the Harley-Davidson's path of travel, and caused a head-on collision," the CHP said in a written statement.

Kimsey was thrown from the motorcycle and suffered major injuries, officials said. Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene.

Several passing motorists stopped to help before first-responders arrived at the scene.

The driver of the Toyota was treated for minor injuries, according to the CHP. The car also contained a passenger, but it was not clear whether that person was hurt.

Tow trucks were summoned to collect the motorcycle and the Toyota as evidence.

Intoxicated driving was not initially suspected and no arrests were made at the scene, officials said.

Kimsey left behind two sons, ages 16 and 20, as well as an 18-year-old daughter, according to a statement accompanying an online fundraiser established on GoFundMe.com to aid the family.

"She will be missed by so many," the statement said. "Those who were fortunate enough to have known her understand the immense sadness that her family, friends, co-workers and students are experiencing."

Kimsey was listed in public records as a teacher with the Apple Valley Unified School District.

The fundraiser surpassed its $6,000 goal in just over three hours as dozens of community members rallied around the family. Donations continued pouring in after the goal was exceeded, some from loved ones, and others anonymously.
