Motorcyclist killed Wichita pedestrian while doing stunts last year. He pled guilty

A 22-year-old Valley Center man pleaded guilty on Tuesday to involuntary manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident in the hit-and-run crash death of a pedestrian last year, Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office spokesman Dan Dillon said.

Police and prosecutors have said Chase G. Faimon was doing tricks on his motorcycle when he hit 48-year-old Kristine Sheffield of Wichita as she crossed the street at 11th and Broadway around 7:15 p.m. on Feb. 20, 2023. Faimon fled after striking Sheffield and was arrested only after authorities released photos of the motorcyclist to the public.

Sheffield was pronounced dead at a Wichita hospital shortly after being hit.

A lawyer listed in court records for Faimon did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the plea.

Police had tried to stop Faimon about two hours before the deadly crash after seeing him perform a wheelie around 13th and I-135. Court records say the officers “activated their emergency lights in an attempt to stop” Faimon but decided against chasing him after he rode onto a sidewalk under the highway, looked back and waved for them to “come on.”

The same officers were on patrol around Central and Broadway at 7:15 p.m. when Faimon followed them, performed the same stunt and sped past them, court records say. The officers recognized Faimon and “did not pursue him due to him fleeing .... earlier in the evening.”

When the officers reached 11th and Broadway, they found Sheffield lying unresponsive in the road, according to court records.

Faimon is scheduled for sentencing on Aug. 9.
