Motorcyclists dies in crash on U.S. 321
BLOWING ROCK — A motorcyclist died after the motorcycle struck an SUV traveling south on U.S. Highway 321, according to the N.C. State Highway Patrol.
On Friday, Aug. 30, at approximately 7:35 p.m., the N.C. State Highway Patrol responded to and investigated a fatal collision in Caldwell County on U.S. Highway 321 near Rocky Knob Road. A 2017 Kawasaki motorcycle traveling north on US 321, crossed the center line and struck a 2014 Mercedes Benz SUV traveling south on U.S. Highway 321, according to a press release from N.C. State Highway Patrol.
The driver of the Kawasaki, Robert Thomas Kampfer, 64, of Boone, was ejected from the motorcycle and succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The driver of the Mercedes Benz, Philip Stephen Amick, of Detroit, Michigan, and a passenger were not injured, according to the N.C. State Highway Patrol.
U.S. Highway 321 was partially closed in the area during the on-scene investigation for several hours. The initial investigation indicates careless and reckless driving to be the contributing circumstance in the collision. No charges will be filed in this case, according to the N.C. State Highway Patrol.
