Nashville 3-year-old dead after shooting, father charged with reckless homicide

A Nashville father wanted for questioning by police after his 3-year-old died from a gunshot to the head was captured by police Thursday.

Officers were called to the family’s East Nashville apartment on Oakwood Avenue before 9 p.m. Wednesday in response to the shooting.

Aydeen Pruitt was taken from the scene to Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt but later died.

Dandre Pruitt, 23, is charged with reckless homicide, child neglect and evidence tampering in connection to the child's shooting. He surrendered to police Thursday night.

“Aydeen’s mother told detectives that she was in the kitchen when she heard a loud pop come from the bedroom,” police said in a statement. “She said shortly afterward, Dandre Pruitt ran out of the room. He reportedly fled the apartment complex with the gun in a white Kia Soul.”

Police said the 23-year-old fled from the family's Oakwood Avenue apartment after the 8:50 p.m. shooting.
