Nashville police: Man beaten trying to diffuse fight at Top Golf dies, another charged

A man is dead after he was kicked and beaten while trying to break up a fight at Top Golf over the weekend.

Metro Nashville Police said Dahal Umesh, 41, died Tuesday morning after a fight Saturday night.

Umesh was with community members attending a concert at the lower level of the Top Golf venue when a dispute broke out in the crowd, police said in a statement. Guests flooded the parking lot, where Umesh tried to diffuse the situation, the statement said.

He was punched, causing him to fall and hit his head on the concrete, police said, adding that he was then kicked in the head while he was on the ground.

Police identified 26-year-old Bishal Rai as the man who kicked Umesh in the head, the statement said. Police arrested Rai Monday evening at his Antioch home and initially charged him with aggravated assault.

"That charge will be upgraded to criminal homicide as the result of Umesh’s death," police said. "A judicial commissioner ordered that Rai be held without bond pending a hearing."
