Nashville police search for suspect after video shows new rainbow crosswalk vandalized

Police are asking for the public's help after a man appears in video footage to dump black paint across the new rainbow crosswalk in East Nashville.

The footage shows the driver of a white, Ford work van pour a container of black paint over the crosswalk at South 14th and Woodland Streets, according to a statement from Metro Nashville Police. The man dumped the paint just after noon on Tuesday, two days after the crosswalk was painted.

In the video, the man reaches his arm out of the window, while the vehicle is stopped at a stop sign, and pours the black liquid out of a container. As he continues through the crosswalk, he again tips the container over as he passes over a second line of rainbow paint.

Hundreds gathered Sunday, the last day of Pride Month, to paint the crosswalk in front of East Nashville's lesbian-owned bar, The Lipstick Lounge.

“I think (it’s) historic, being a part of the moment in Nashville. It’s a long time coming and being recognized as a community, as part of the community, that’s going to be here continuously, not just in June, it’s throughout the year,” East Nashville resident Luke Finck said at the event.

Anyone with information about the driver, or the van, is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 615-742-7463.
