National Weather Service confirms 7 tornadoes touched down in Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — The National Weather Service (NWS) confirmed that there were seven tornadoes that touched down around Virginia, Maryland and West Virginia Wednesday evening.

Tornadoes touched down in Inwood, W.Va., and in Leesburg, Va. In Maryland, residents saw tornados sweep through Central Montgomery County, Columbia, Southern Baltimore County, Middle River and in Eldersburg.

The storm damage caused trees to topple over, damaging cars and splitting homes. Many people were trapped in their homes in Gaithersburg, Md. and had to be rescued.

The tornado that touched down in Montgomery County was combined into a single 12-mile path which appeared to have lifted multiple times, according to NWS.

Crews from the NWS went out to do some preliminary surveys of damage Thursday.
